Survey Software Review

Why Use Survey Software?

The top performers in our review are Survey Gizmo, the Gold Award winner; Survey Monkey, the Silver Award winner; and Typeform, the Bronze Award winner. Here’s more on choosing a software to meet your needs, along with detail on how we arrived at our ranking of 10 systems.

Survey software provides you a simple solution for tracking the viewpoints of your key target audiences. Using this software, you can keep your finger on the pulse of how your customers, potential customers and employees are being influenced by your business. Using these survey tools, you can measure various things, such as satisfaction levels, employee to management satisfaction, market research, feedback from customers and more. These survey tools enable you to carefully monitor and track what your stakeholders are saying and implement business policies based on these observations.

Types of survey software range from simple survey tools that allow you to make simple surveys to send to your friends, such as the polls you see sent out via Facebook apps, all the way to survey programs and survey management software that can be used by professional researchers conducting studies on behalf of large organizations.

The best survey software for your business depends on your business needs and should fall somewhere between these two extremes. The software should be easy to use, and you should be able to learn how to use the software quickly. It should also have an adequate set of tools that allows you to track responses as they come in, though since you will be focusing on your organization and running this software for yourself, you do not need the in-depth tools needed for tracking multiple organizations over a period of time. Read some of our articles for more information about survey software.

All of the survey systems we reviewed are available online and hosted through secure cloud servers. They are best for business owners who prefer software be updated automatically and do not want to involve IT in software maintenance or to be responsible for their own upgrades.

It is easy to try a survey program without commitment. All of the services we reviewed offer a free trial or basic services that can be upgraded at anytime. To provide the fairest comparison between services, we evaluated each using the basic professional plan that was offered. Prices for these plans range from about $20 to $50 per month.

The services and packages that we evaluated are each geared toward meeting the needs of small business owners and are more advanced than packages that would be used for personal websites or blogs. Most services on the lineup allow you to upgrade to a higher plan at any time, so are scalable as your business grows.

Survey Software: How We Tested, What We Found

Two key components that you should consider with survey tools are how user friendly the survey design software is when you are building your survey and the experience of those taking the survey on their desktop and mobile devices. The companies provide their own information and tutorials on these attributes, but we carried our own tests to assess the usability of these systems.

To test these services, we put them through practical application tests to gauge how well they performed in situations commonly used by businesses. We signed up for a trial of each service so that we could evaluate the design and usability of the user platform and build test surveys. Once we had access to the platforms, we evaluated its layout and looked for things that would make the platform easy to learn and user friendly. For example, are the icons easily identifiable? Is it apparent where to go to begin to build a survey and distribute surveys to users?

We then built surveys, including basic questions and selections provided by the survey creator. Next, we sent these surveys and measured distribution methods and the analytics provided by these survey tools as responses came back in. We found that the best survey builders allow you to quickly edit questions and rearrange the order of your survey without many additional steps. One survey software that did this exceptionally well with this was Typeform.

The second key area we tested was the experience of those taking the survey. The respondent experience is important because it means more people will finish the test, and therefore arm your company with more meaningful and complete data. When we sent our surveys out to be tested, we carefully collected information on the respondents, such as how the survey preformed on their browsers and what design flaws came up that would cause frustrations for potential customers and employees.

During this test, we found that respondents appreciated surveys that provided a progression bar and did not require them to continuously click through to the next question. One survey creator that did this well was QuestionPro.

Top Ten Reviews seeks, whenever possible, to evaluate all products and services in hands-on tests that simulate as closely as possible the experiences of a typical consumer. The companies had no input or influence over our test methodology, nor was the methodology provided to any of them in more detail than is available through reading our reviews. Results of our evaluations were not provided to the companies in advance of publication.

What Else Is Important in Selecting Survey Software?

While the attributes we tested should be the leading considerations when you decide which survey system to use, other factors and features should figure into your decision. Here is a rundown of some of the other factors that we looked at when reviewing these survey programs.

Survey Software: Is Design Important to You?
While all of the services we evaluated provide some type of survey design feature that allows you to arrange your survey questions and tweak the layout, some services go further to help you create a survey that is visually appealing to your end users.

One service that does this especially well is Typeform. This software provider excels in survey design and in providing you instruction for best practices on how to design a survey. We found the clean design and additional icons for rating things especially appealing, as they allow you to add a fun and personal touch to your surveys.

Survey Software: Are Extra Analytics Worth More to You?
Each service on the lineup provides survey tools that track responses to your survey and evaluate the data from your surveys. If you are looking for especially in-depth information and additional ways to utilize this data, then some services provide more amped-up analytical tools than others do.

Other important considerations are options that fit your industry. For example, SurveyMoz provides discounted services to non-profit organizations. If you are in the health care industry, you will need to find a survey software that is HIPAA compliant. Typeform's basic package is HIPAA compliant, and other software providers, such as Survey Monkey and Survey Gizmo, offer HIPAA-compliant packages above their basic offerings.

Survey Software Verdict & Recommendations

Through our review process, SurveyGizmo, Survey Monkey and Typeform stood out against the rest. These services outperformed the competition during our testing process and provided the most complete set of features to help you build, distribute and analyze surveys to gain insight from your key stakeholders.

Another service that just missed the top three is QuestionPro. This survey software stands out because of its usability for you as the survey creator and for the survey respondents.
